We love to say “Thank you for your service”. But for deported veterans those words ring hollow. This work exposes a brutal contradiction; how a country that benefits from service can so easily abandon those who gave it. If we claim to value veterans then we can’t keep looking away.
Andrew McGregor
Any US veteran who is not a citizen is deported if they are convicted of a crime and after they serve their prison sentence. Military recruiters often promise citizenship when people enlist and this can happen but there is currently no mechanism in the military to ensure that it does. As a result of this policy issue that goes back to the 1990’s, many veterans are forced to live in exile away from their families and country. Their only way of legal return becomes death when their bodies are flown to the USA to be buried with military honors.
